Concept Engineering Manager, Hants, mechanical, mechatronics, electronics, firmware
Main Purpose of the job
Provide the engineering design leadership for the Concept Engineering Group, responsible for generating new innovative, cost effective, class leading system and sub-system concepts for the future generations of products.
Job Requirements
Provide effective management and engineering leadership for designated concept projects that will yield highly innovative cost effective, manufacturable solutions.
Provide a watching brief on appropriate technology and manufacturing methods that would have the potential to be incorporated into new products.
Provide the conceptual input into new product development and carry out projects that will fully support the long term product strategy and enable developments/projects to be split into technology, platform and product.
Ensure that concept development projects are sufficiently forward facing to ensure that any new technology is adequately de-risked and is available in sufficient time to meet the medium and long range product development programs
Provide effective leadership and drive, to ensure assigned projects are delivered to the agreed performance, functionality, cost and timescales.
Ensure that all new novel applicable ideas generated by the Concept Group are adequately protected or patented.
Ensure that good links and working relationships are maintained with key technology suppliers internal and external to the business, this would include sources within Universities and third party technology companies.
Ensure an appropriate level of project resource is maintained on a specific project and that the type of resource, whether this is internal or external is consistent with the designated 'core competences' of the company.
Manage external contractors where used taking full ownership of the technical, contractual and commercial elements.
Develop & deliver, cost effective, low risk project plans which fully meet, and exceed the needs of the business.
Ensure effective project progress reports are fed back to Engineering management in the agreed format, flagging significant deviations from the plan and providing solutions to close any gaps arising.
Ensure projects are delivered within the defined Engineering process, timescales and budgets.
Escalate major problems to senior management, taking ownership for subsequent agreed corrective action plans and contingency planning.
Key Skills Required
Candidates are likely to have come from a Mechanical Design Engineering functional background. Need to have sufficient technical, marketing & business skills to operate effectively and be able to challenge the functional inputs into the Concept Development project teams. Must also have a level of capability in electronics and firmware design at the systems level i.E. Be fully fluent in the design of mechatronic products.
Candidates must have considerable experience of leading significant innovative engineering projects within a mechatronic environment. Must have a demonstrable track record in bringing to market highly innovative products.
Strong influencing skills - ability to secure support and co-operation from peers and seniors via persuasion rather than direct authority.
Ability to adapt style to different individuals / environments.
Excellent organisation, planning and prioritisation skills.
High levels of drive and tenacity to achieve programme deliverables.
Inspirational leadership style - ability to engage project teams to deliver against challenging targets.
A gifted mechanical design engineer, capable of leading the team and providing elegant solutions in his/her own right.
